A Fork in the Blogging Road

I have a confession. I haven’t posted for a while because I don’t enjoy my blog right now. Why?

1. My work is running the blog and social media for Home Educating Family. I’m honestly not that “into” writing blog posts at the end of my day.

2. To do a blog post correctly if you want to get noticed, you need to optimize for SEO with your keywords, headings, and more. You need to make sure you have a pinnable image for folks to share on Pinterest. You need to think of where you can add affiliate links. Where can I link to a former post? How can I tweak? Etc. I. Just. Don’t. Have. Time. For. That. And honestly, at this point in my life it takes out the joy of blogging.

I’ve been thinking about ending my blog. Not just for a week. For months, perhaps a year. I can’t remember.

However, I do enjoy helping others by sharing my experiences. I think of things to write all the time, I just don’t have the time for all of the other stuff.

Therefore, I’ve come to a decision. For now, I’m not going to worry about all the extras. I’ll share my heart and my days and let that be enough.

Yes, I’ll add one easy image so people can share on Pinterest, but that’s about it.

I'm in a free #specialneeds ebook!

Let’s get started.Β I’m really excited to be in this ebook with my fabulous friend Jennifer Janes and the very-popular homeschool and special needs speaker/writer Carol Barnier. They are both fabulous and write regularly for HEDUA’s blog. For now, you can grab this ebook that focuses on special needs for FREE! It’s great encouragement for all special needs parents and will also encourage all homeschool parents, whether or not you have a special needs child. After all, don’t all kids hit a place where they don’t know what to write? Don’t all homeschool parents get overwhelmed at some point? Go grab your ebook and come back later for an update on my Family Hope Center program.

  1. I totally get it. I’ve been blogging for almost 20 years now before it was ‘in’ I guess. First it was about my chronic illness (which is now not so chronic) then about our daughter. Now it’s about my life in general which includes homeschooling. I can’t see it as a business because I seriously don’t have the time. Or energy! I don’t know how these ladies do it. My blog posts are few and far between on my new blog but it’s not a top priority for me. My family is and they need me. πŸ™‚

  2. I took a several-year hiatus from mine and just started back up again. I’m tired of “socializing” with folks via Facebook when it felt like I knew more about them via their blogs. Granted a lot of my friends no longer blog, since FB is easier and faster – but in the mean time, I’ve changed and am finding other blogs that meet the needs – or wants – of the new me. I may not rise to the top of the SEO charts, and when I post affiliate links, I know full well they may make me zero, zilch, zip…. but it’s nice to be back now that it’s not an obligation.

I hope you find the right spot for your blog in your schedule and heart for this season of your life as well. I know firsthand how very difficult it is to enjoy your personal blog while also blogging for work after doing that for a good ten years, with various companies. Even if the company is awesome, there’s little left for your own blog at the end of the day! ((Hugs))

  3. Jenny,
I made the decision at 2:1 when I was there that I never wanted to be one of the bigger bloggers. Of course I’d like to make an extra dollar or two, but the fact is that’s not what I’m here for. God gave me my blog when I needed it (and Him) most. He gave me that place for a very specific reason and he will bring the very specific people that are supposed to read it. Nothing I do will bring the one that God wants to be there, it’s all him.

I’m praying you find the perfect place on the new path you’re taking. God will bring the one he wants here for you too! πŸ™‚

  4. Totally understand what you are saying!!

And this, “2. To do a blog post correctly if you want to get noticed, you need to optimize for SEO with your keywords, headings, and more. You need to make sure you have a pinnable image for folks to share on Pinterest. You need to think of where you can add affiliate links. Where can I link to a former post? How can I tweak? Etc. I. You are so right about it!!! I could go on and on, but won’t. πŸ™‚

I have told someone that as long as you do it to glorify God, He will bring those to you, who need your words the most!!

  5. Hi,

I just read your post and totally understand where you’re coming from. Homeschooling and motherhood are huge investments, let alone working on SEO already during the day. I was wondering, even though you will be posting journal-like entries from now on, if you would be open to the possibility of publishing a guest post on your site, if it did have all the bells and whistles that attract an audience.

I had an idea for a post about how to keep kids interested in music through fun playtime activities and special motivation to practice their own instruments. If this sounds at all interesting to you please let me know. I could send some sample links for you to view my writing.

Thank you so much for your open honesty.
    Sincerely,
    Jessica
